Building on the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre’s established hatchery capability, the initiative expands high-value species production, integrates aquaponics and food security systems, and strengthens cultural governance and sea-country stewardship. The Indigenous Aquaculture Hatchery will establish a culturally led oyster and sea cucumber enterprise for the Southern Gulf, leveraging the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre’s hatchery capability to accelerate production and reduce setup costs. Combining closed-system spat production in Karumba with grow-out sites across Gulf river systems and sea-country coastlines, the initiative strengthens Indigenous employment, marine restoration and premium market supply. Scalable, restoration-focused and grounded in Traditional Owner governance, it delivers a high-value opportunity for sustainable aquaculture growth in the Gulf.

The Hughenden Indigenous Plant Nursery will expand the Malkarri nursery model into a regional hub for native tree propagation and local food production, strengthening environmental restoration and community food security across Northwest Queensland.
